"SOMA, SAN FRANCISCO, A MODEL OF URBAN SUSTAINABILITY" - 2025
By Alessandra Mattanza
“You have to get inspiration from life, and working with light is no exception. When we inherit a space, albeit large or quite small, we can transform it, which in turn completely transforms our feelings, emotions, and sense of the world. The beauty of design is that it is always rewarding, especially when it is aesthetic and exhibits social ideas”.
– Daniel Libeskind
Urban sustainability is planning cities that aim to improve social, economic, and environmental conditions.
Urban sustainability is planning cities that aim to ensure the quality of life and people’s needs for a better world.
Urban sustainability is planning cities that aim to create a more holistic approach to sustainable development that respects cultural integrity and maintains the heritage and traditions of the place.
Urban sustainability is shaping cities thanks to the impact of visionaries, thinkers, innovators, and changemakers, the “contemporary heroes” of the future.
SOMA, SAN FRANCISCO, A MODEL OF URBAN SUSTAINABILITY, in the HYATT REGENCY SAN FRANCISCO DOWNTOWN SOMA HOTEL, SAN FRANCISCO, focuses on one of the world’s most innovative neighborhoods. It is constantly changing concerning the environment and urban character for a better life, looking for the perfect balance between past, present, and future: SoMA.
This multimedia art project explores the neighborhood’s soul as the new face of contemporary San Francisco, bridging culture, technology, architecture, humanity, and nature through its buildings, doors, gardens, and streets in an intimate portrait of some of the city’s most unknown parts.
SoMA is an incredible melting pot of some of the symbols of the new San Francisco, such as Salesforce Tower, Salesforce Park, and Oracle Park, as its cultural center, with many different museums, such as SFMOMA, the Museum of the African Diaspora, the Contemporary Jewish Museum, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, as its business center with the Moscone Center, as its will to preserve nature and the environment with marvelous and unexpected gardens among high rise buildings, with fountains with games of waters, as the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial and Fountain by Danish artist Lin Utzon.
SOMA, SAN FRANCISCO, A MODEL OF URBAN SUSTAINABILITY is part of the global art project A BETTER PLANET, A BETTER WORLD (www.abetterplanetabetterworld.com), which supports the United Nations’ SDGs. The project’s art exhibition opened at the United Nations in New York from July to August 2023, and in 2024 at the KUNSTLABOR 2 / MUCA Museum in Munich, Germany, and the ITALIAN CULTURAL INSTITUTE AND INNOVIT CENTER in San Francisco.
